Zellige Tile

Handmade in Morocco, no two pieces are alike. This tile format has been credited as being “trendy” but the truth is that Zellige tile has been produced in Morocco since the 10th century. It is truly an ancient form of artistic craftsmanship.

The undulated surface of each hand-crafted piece is what gives this product extraordinary texture and color value. A variety of colors, ranging from light pastel to dark jewel tones, it’s as though each piece is just a fraction of the whole color palette. I love how a single product can have so many elements. For me, it is like a watercolor painting. The whole here is certainly greater than the sum of the parts.

The yellow colorway from Zia Tile is my favorite.

Here is a great example of an all-white bathroom that won’t bore you to tears. The craftsmanship and arrangement of the tiles are truly impressive.

Teetering on the edge of trendy. But I think I could love this traditional white wall with a blush Zellige tile accent wall. This is also a great example of a high-low moment. The 2” x 2” tiles are typically less expensive and easier to install.

This wall tile, used in combination with a floor tile of the same color might be slightly more expected.

Zellige tile typically is more expensive to install.  This bathroom is a great example of how to minimize a huge install cost if that is not in the budget.  Please consult a professional tile installer who has previous experience with installing handmade tiles of this nature.

I love an all-over green and white bathroom and this bathroom does not disappoint. Not sure I would have bothered with the tub in the shower, but I love the green and white installation. So fresh, so clean!!!

If you are not brave enough to lean into the inconsistencies of Zellige, but you love the variation in color, then perhaps the Provencal Collection from Ann Sacks tile is a good idea. A bold color palette featuring 14 colors and 7 different field tile sizes, The Provencal Collection is Handmade at their factory in Portland, OR. While there is still variation in color and shape, the overall texture is slightly more consistent than that of traditional zellige tiles. I love the unique 3” x 8” brick and of course, a classic 4” x 4” tile never disappoints.
