A Bit of Grit and Grace

Ramey Caulkins began her design career in 1996, working for Ann Sacks Tile and Stone, later working for their parent company, Kohler. This turned into an 8-year immersion into the world of craftsmanship, manufacturing, architecture, and materials and surfaces—sparking a curiosity for how things are made, crafted, and age over time.

In 2003, Griffin Design was born, and it became the design studio where Ramey could focus on interior designs and tile, stone, and decorative surfaces consulting in Colorado, Montana, New England and Florida. She knows how to roll up her sleeves and get to work. Having grown up in the sample room, she’s been a part of the design process since as early as she can remember. Her design empathy and expertise are founded on understanding the functionality of a space. Ramey works closely with architects who have an outside-in approach, while she works best from the inside out.

Behind the Name

A Griffin is a legendary creature that is a combination of both a lion and an eagle. A Griffin symbolizes strength, courage, leadership, and intelligence. We chose a Griffin to represent our work because we see the full picture, and we help imagine the design process from start to finish.

“I like to say that I have the gift of the gut, and my intuition hasn’t steered me wrong yet.”

Growing up in Buffalo, NY, I had a front-row seat to what significant architecture looked and felt like. It’s why I value the relationships I’ve built with architects, builders, craftsmen, and designers over the years. We all speak a similar language—antique, custom, textiles, and building codes. But what excites me the most about my job is the process. I love meeting with clients, visiting job sites, sourcing the perfect pieces, overseeing complex installations, and hearing from satisfied clients, or better yet, hearing from their happy houseguests!
