The Square is Back Baby!

SQUARETILE-01.jpg

I’m kind of having a love affair with an old friend, the square tile. For what seems like the better part of a decade the 3” x 6” subway tile has made its presence and overshadowed the 4”x 4” and 6” x 6”  square format. Let’s face it the reason the 3” x 6” is referred to as “subway” tile is because it belongs adorning the walls of exactly that, a subway stop.  The 4” and 6” square is a classic. Simple white tiles with a black pencil liner is the little black dress of tile. You will never be out of style no matter where you are.

This bathroom from the Marlton Hotel in NYC is one of my favorites. I adore the Marlton Hotel. The rooms are cozy and sometimes you have to close the bathroom door to open  the closet door, and I love it. The bathrooms are sky blue 6” x 6” field tile with a black pencil liner. The bathroom floors are black and white marble.  There is barely enough room to do the hokey pokey and yet it’s perfectly efficient.

A very similar and well-priced tile is available from Walker Zanger’s 6th Avenue collection. A well-edited palette of shapes and colors, the 6th Avenue collection is hardly trendy. A true handmade look, this tile collection should be at the front of every designers’ mind when making timeless, thoughtfully priced tile selections.

Don’t fight the fun in this bathroom.

Recreate this pink and black classic with the Kaleidoscope collection from Walker Zanger.

Fireclay Foundations is $15.00SF. And is available in 5 shapes and 8 colorways. Below is a great installation shot of an all-white shower featuring 6” x 6” Fireclay Foundations on the wall and the 4” hexagon for the shower floor.

Normally, I would not encourage one to be square, but in this case, I say lean in.  And that is just my 2cents.
